Backyard BBQ Vegan Burger Bar
Nothing says summer like a backyard cookout, and this vegan burger bar brings all the smoky, saucy, stacked-high goodness without any beef required. The star of the show is a hearty black bean-walnut patty, seasoned with smoked paprika and a splash of liquid smoke, then charred on the grill until crisp on the outside and tender within. Melted cashew cheddar sauce drapes over each patty for that classic gooey burger experience, while sweet caramelized onions and a tangy, smoky barbecue sauce round out the flavor profile. Set it up as an interactive bar: grill a big batch of patties, simmer the onions low and slow, whisk together the cashew cheese, and lay out all the classic fixings — lettuce, tomato, pickles, red onion, and toasted buns — so everyone can build their dream burger. It's a crowd-pleasing centerpiece for any backyard gathering, proving that plant-based cooking can be just as smoky, saucy, and satisfying as traditional BBQ fare. Packed with plant protein from black beans and walnuts, healthy fats from cashews, and loads of fresh veggie toppings, this burger bar fits perfectly into a vegan lifestyle while still delivering that nostalgic cookout experience everyone craves.</long_description> <parameter name="meta_description">Smoky black bean-walnut patties, melty cashew cheddar & BBQ fixings make this vegan burger bar the star of any backyard cookout.

- 2 tbspVegan butter
- 1 tbspbrown sugar
- 1 tbspbalsamic vinegar
- 1 cupBarbecue sauce, store-bought vegan BBQ sauce
- 6Burger buns, vegan, toasted
- 6 leaveslettuce leaves
- 2tomato, sliced
- 1red onion, thinly sliced
- 1 cupDill pickles, sliced
Method
- In a small bowl, mix the ground flaxseed with water and let sit for 5 minutes to form a gel (this is your egg replacer).
- In a food processor, pulse the black beans, toasted walnuts, and rolled oats until coarsely combined but still textured — do not puree smooth.
- Transfer the mixture to a mixing bowl and stir in the smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, liquid smoke, soy sauce, flax egg, salt, and pepper until well combined.
- Divide the mixture into 6 equal portions and shape into patties. Place on a baking sheet and refrigerate for at least 20 minutes to firm up. 20:00
- Meanwhile, melt the vegan butter in a skillet over medium-low heat. Add the sliced yellow onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened, about 10 minutes. 10:00
- Stir in the brown sugar and balsamic vinegar, then continue cooking over low heat, stirring occasionally, until deeply caramelized and jammy, about 15-20 more minutes. 20:00
- While the onions cook, combine the soaked cashews, nutritional yeast, plant milk, lemon juice, turmeric, and tapioca starch in a blender. Blend until completely smooth.
- Pour the cashew mixture into a small saucepan and cook over medium heat, whisking constantly, until thickened into a glossy, stretchy cheese sauce, about 5 minutes. 5:00
- Preheat the grill to medium-high heat and brush the grates with neutral oil. Brush the patties with the remaining oil.
- Grill the patties for 4-5 minutes per side, flipping carefully with a spatula, until nicely charred and heated through. 8:00
- During the last minute of grilling, brush each patty generously with barbecue sauce and let it caramelize slightly on the grill. 1:00
- Toast the burger buns on the grill for about 1 minute until lightly golden. 1:00
- Set up the burger bar: arrange the grilled patties, warm cashew cheese sauce, caramelized onions, lettuce, tomato, red onion, pickles, and extra barbecue sauce for everyone to build their own burger.
