Seared Sesame Beef Tataki with Daikon-Cucumber Salad
This Japanese-inspired tataki keeps things light, bright and fast without skimping on protein. A lean sirloin is rubbed with sesame and seared hard for just a minute or two per side, leaving the center rare and juicy, then sliced thin and drizzled with a punchy ponzu-style dressing of citrus, soy and ginger. No cream, no heavy oil — all the richness comes from toasted sesame and umami-packed soy. Underneath, a crunchy tangle of julienned daikon and cucumber is tossed in rice vinegar for a crisp, hydrating base that balances the richness of the beef and adds volume to the plate without adding bulk. The whole dish comes together in well under 30 minutes, making it an easy weeknight option. It's a small, satisfying plate: lean beef delivers a generous hit of protein in a modest portion, the vegetables bring fiber and crunch, and the dressing brings all the brightness, so nothing feels heavy or greasy. A sprinkle of toasted sesame seeds and scallion finishes it off.
Ingredients
- 10 ozBeef sirloin steak, lean, trimmed of excess fat, about 1.5 inches thick
- 2 tbspsesame seeds, mixed white and black if available, divided
- 1 tsptoasted sesame oil, for rubbing on beef

- 3 tbspsoy sauce, or tamari for gluten-free
- 2 tbspfresh lemon juice
- 1 tbspfresh lime juice
- 1 tspfresh ginger, grated
- 1 clovegarlic, grated or minced
- 1.5 cupsdaikon radish, peeled and julienned
- 1 mediumcucumber, julienned or thinly sliced
- 1.5 tbsprice vinegar, unseasoned
- 2scallions, thinly sliced, for garnish
Method
- Pat the beef sirloin dry with paper towel. Rub all over with toasted sesame oil, then season generously with salt, black pepper, and 1 tablespoon of the sesame seeds, pressing to adhere.
- In the small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, lemon juice, lime juice, grated ginger and garlic to make the ponzu-style dressing. Set aside.
- In the medium bowl, toss the julienned daikon and cucumber with rice vinegar. Set aside to lightly pickle while you cook the beef.
- Heat avocado oil in the skillet over high heat until just smoking. Sear the beef for 60-90 seconds per side, turning with tongs, until a deep crust forms but the center stays rare. 2:30
- Transfer the beef to a cutting board and rest for 3 minutes, then slice very thinly against the grain. 3:00
- Divide the daikon-cucumber salad between two plates. Fan the sliced beef over the top, drizzle with the ponzu dressing, and sprinkle with remaining sesame seeds and sliced scallions.
